Distance Education System with the additional benefits of innovative
use of satellite communication, low power transmitters, internet and
web technologies has turned out to be an effective and popular mode of
learning. The degrees from distance learning institutes have been duly
recognised and given due weightage by the government, private and MNC
Human Resource recruiters.
This system of learning has been proved to be most suitable for working
professionals, people in remote areas away from higher educational centres
or anybody who can’t avail the classroom teaching on a regular
basis.
In India, there are 10 open universities and a number of regular universities
providing distance education facilities on a range of professional, vocational
and other regular courses.
The universities/institutions provide the student all the printed study
materials/CDs of their own and training/teaching through contact classes
at various nodal centres in select cities/towns.
The minimum eligibilities for admission to these distance education programmes
are almost similar to regular courses offered by other universities/institutions.
Many leading coaching institutions in India are successfully providing
coaching for competitive exams and entrance tests for professional courses
like MBA, Medical, Engineering, GRE, TOEFL, GATE, Civil Services, NET/careers
etc.
Generally, open universities offer flexible programme options for people
who fall short of formal qualifications for a particular study.
